Microsoft Outlook Express
To configure Microsoft Outlook Express, follow these steps:
Open Outlook Express. You do not need to be on-line to do configure
Outlook Express. Should you get any errors offline, simply close or hide
them.
Tools Menu
Click tools, then go to accounts at toward the bottom of the pop-up
window and left click accounts.
|
Internet Accounts Menu
When the Internet account window is displayed, click the mail
tab at the top to display the mail servers.
Highlight pop3.config.com, then go to the properties button
on the right.
If there is no mail configuration at all, click the add button,
then choose mail on the right and follow the prompts. You may
always print this page out for the necessary config.com settings
and come back to the mail server properties once a mail server
has been added, to tune or correct the settings.

General Properties Menu
-
Mail Account: This can be any lable
and has no effect on the configuration. We recommend pop3.config.com
since that is the name of our pop3 protocol mail server.
-
Name: This is usually your full real
name. Some people may only use their first name and others
may use an alias. This is displayed to everyone that you
send email to.
-
Organization: This may be left blank
or used for commercial accounts. We encourage our subscribers
to type in config.com Internet services rather than
leave it blank since this advertises who your Internet provider
is;^) We sincerely thank those that do choose to support
your local ISP!
-
E-Mail Address: type your full complete
e-mail address here i.e. username@config.com rather than
just your log-in username.
-
Reply Address: This is an optional
field and is often used by people who have more than one
e-mail address or service provider, but wish to only have
to check one mail server. Include this account when syncronizing
should be checked.

Server Properties Menu
My incoming mail server should be a POP3 server. config.com
doesn't support the IMAP protocol.
- incoming mail (POP3): pop3.config.com
- outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp.config.com
POP3 means Post Office Protocol version 3.
SMTP means Simple Mail Transport Protocol.
Note: Many ISP's use only one actual
server and will name it something like mail.theirdomain.com. As
their subscribers base grows, their e-mail server becomes slower.
config.com has planned for growth by using the names of each protocol
so that as our e-mail server should become slower, we simply buy
another powerful server and separate the incoming and outgoing
mail servers. This design will allow us to maintain the fastest
available e-mail service possible!

Connection Properties Menu"
Note: Microsoft's defualt settings
are wrong for traditional UNIX based Internet service protocols!
The default settings usually are set to either "dial any
available connection" or "dial defualt modem connection".
What happens is if one is not already on the 'net then it works
fine, but if one is already on-line and decides to check their
e-mail it will allow the pickup of new mail, but won't send it
out and effectively hangs up the phone because it's trying to
make a connection thinking it's off-line. To solve this problem,
set the connection settings to LAN (Local Area Network).
Check the box: Connect to this account using: Go to the drop down
box just below the check box and set it to LAN (local Area Network),
usually located the bottom of the drop down box.
|
Security Properties Menu
This box usually isn't a necessary to setup for the purpose
of sending and receiving e-mail. Since I was taking the time to
explain the mail settings in outlook, I thought it would be nice
to offer information regarding all the settings.
The security settings are available for importing secure certificates
for a few reasons. First, to prove you are who you say you are.
Second, to have the ability to encrypt messages between two users
who both have each others certificates. Third, some web sites
have the ability to use the certificate for authenticating access.
Sources of additional information regarding security include
Thawte.Com which
offers a FREE personal certificate and Verisign.Com
which offers a low priced more detailed personal certificate.

Advanced Properties Menu
Server Port numbers
- Outgoing mail: 25
- Incoming mail: 110
These port settings are Internet standards and generally never
changed!
Server timeouts
Generally the default timeout of 1 minute is acceptable. On busy
networks or slow servers, this may need to be extended.
Sending
This is a leftover setting from an old protocol known as UUCP
(UNIX copy to PC). In the old days, messages used to be broken
up using uuencode into packets and the packets would be reassembled
using uudecode.
A few Internet mail servers limit the size of the messages their
users can receive. Commercial providers like AOL and many Universities
often limit their users to only 100k for a single message. These
settings may offer a work around to sending users limited by size,
but chances are, the receiver wouldn't know how to reassemble
the packets.
We recommend leaving the break apart box unchecked.
Delivery
Leave a copy of messages on the server should be unchecked for
most users! Some users have two computers i.e. a notebook and
a desktop and may have their notebook set to leave on the server
and their desktop to remove.
If a copy of the messages is left on the server then your
5MB email quota will fill up! You will then not be able to receive
any more email until you contact us to remove your quota. Extra
hard drive storage is $5.00 per 10MB.
Remove from server after x days? This is another area
where Microsoft is proprietary. These settings only work with
Microsoft networks!
Remove from server when deleted from deleted items?
This is another area where Microsoft is proprietary. These settings
only work with Microsoft networks!
